Affirmation became the primary social reflex. Affirm
experience. Affirm identity. Affirm desire. Affirm grievance.

To hesitate was cold. To question, unsafe. To deny, - violent.
So affirmation spread — first as courtesy, then as virtue,
                              finally as obligation.

                         A curious inversion followed.
                   To restrain oneself appeared oppressive.
                        To restrain another, intolerable.

Yet to restrain dissent — necessary.
                     The vocabulary adjusted accordingly.
                                Harm expanded.

                               Safety broadened.
                               Offense deepened.
Words acquired weight that actions had shed.

One could wound without touch, damage without act, injure
                               without intention.
And because harm was now interior,

                       judgment could be externalized.
Public. Measured. Counted. Reaction became evidence.
Thus morality migrated from conscience to audience.

The witness replaced the inner voice.
                     If many condemned, wrong existed.
                     If many approved, wrong dissolved.
                 Conscience, once solitary, became statistical.

The self learned to scan outward before inward.
Is it accepted? Is it affirmed? Is it validated?

                           Only then — permissible.
                    The commandments had not vanished.
                               They had thinned.
